.WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY'S VULNERABILITY
by Jay Herling

With new technology, we now see the number of wireless
applications exploding. For instance, you can use a
wireless laptop computer, taking it from room to room
within signal range of a router, working wire free.
The basic concept of "wireless" has been around for some
time. Look at the remote control for the television. It
used to be that to turn the television on or off, you had
to stand up, walk to the television, and manually make
adjustments.

The cell phone is the most popular, wireless invention used
today. People everywhere have their right hands held up to
their right ear and talking to who knows all the time now.
There are so many choices of wireless subscriptions with
all kinds of different ways to use a cell phone. Free from
the wire, people are free to to about their business and
still keep in contact with who they need to. The network
itself has gone wireless itself, which is great for the s
maller businesses who need to stay connected to each other.

Although all this wireless-ness has made our lives easier
and more economical, it does come with a price. Wireless
networks are easy targets for those who know the system
and want to use it for unlawful purposes. High speed
Internet access is great and we love to use it, and in all
fairness, these networks back up their connections with
good security services of an Internet Center, which houses
an infrastructure. This also allows smaller businesses to
stay competitive without having to spend their money on
expensive equipment.

Although the wireless network is a tremendous benefit, and
more and more security measures are being implemented,
risks remain. The main problem is that the Wireless
Equivalent Privacy or WEP encryption built into wireless
networks can be compromised somewhat easily. Because of
this, we are now seeing different types of attacks that
need to be addressed and resolved quickly.

Insertion attack, is were an unauthorized device is placed
on a wireless network and getting online without permission
through the proper channels. This is a big problem in the
world of wireless Internet today, if your getting service
but not paying for this service, then it's considered
stealing. Intercepting and monitoring traffic on a wireless
network is another big problem, and this in itself is
illegal also.

Jamming frequency airwaves is another problem on the
Internet today. Hackers will jam a frequency which will then
not allow anyone to get to their providers. It doesn't
matter how far advance we become, there will always be those
out there who will find a way to mess things up. It's just
human nature for some people to want to hurt others in some
form or another. As long as we have wireless technology,
there will be people who believe they can beat the system,
or don't feel they should pay for services most of us do.
We're not going back though, but venturing ahead to see
what's around the next corner, that too is one of the best
parts of our human nature.
