Five Reasons to Give to Charity
by Cait Genereuse

Giving to charity benefits yourself as much or more than
it benefits those to whom you give. That reason alone
should be sufficient to justify starting now. If you need
more convincing, read on:

1. Think about this: If you improve the lifestyles of the
least prosperous and least able among us, doesn't it
stand to reason that your action improves the average
standard of living overall?

2. Do you want to feel better about yourself? Many
leading self-help authorities will tell you that
you'll feel better about yourself by turning your
attention away from yourself and towards causes
greater than yourself. Charitable giving of our
resources is an easy way to do this.

3. Are you finding that people are unaware of some
of the pressing needs of others around them that
need to be met? Set an example by being the first
to recognize those needs and by being the first to
take action to meet them.

4. Most of us know that tax deductions are available to
those who give to charity. The question is: Are you taking
as much advantage of that provision as you could be?

5. The four previous reasons hint at this: Giving to
others often results in greater happiness, prosperity,
and recognition for ourselves. While none of those may
be your primary motivation for giving to a charity, any
of them will likely be welcomed and appreciated when they
occur.

Don't make giving to charity a big deal. Do what you can
now, and continue doing what you can over time, but
resolve to give something starting today. Over time,
you'll be able to prove to yourself that you made the
right decision.
